Arrests Across Northeast: Social Media Posts Spark Controversy Post-Pahalgam Attack

In the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives, including those of a Navy officer and an Intelligence Bureau official, authorities have arrested 19 individuals across Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya. The arrested include an MLA, a journalist, students, a lawyer, and retired teachers, primarily for their social media posts deemed inflammatory or anti-national. Assam witnessed the highest number of arrests, with 14 individuals detained, including Aminul Islam, an MLA from the All India United Democratic Front, charged with sedition for controversial remarks. Tripura and Meghalaya also reported arrests, including retired teachers and a 30-year-old man for similar offenses. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards anti-national activities, warning of stringent actions under the National Security Act. This incident underscores the growing scrutiny of online expressions and the delicate freedom of speech and national security.
